Lions QB Teddy Bridgewater suddenly retires during training camp

Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has retired from the NFL again, stepping away from the team during training camp.

The Lions placed the 33-year-old on the reserve/retired list ahead of Sunday's practice, ESPN reported.

Bridgewater previously retired after the 2023 season before returning to Detroit the following year.

Head coach Dan Campbell said he believes Bridgewater's latest retirement could be permanent.

"I think he can only truly answer that, but I feel like this is where it's at for sure right now,” Campbell said, according to ESPN.

“And his biggest worry was letting us down. That's the type of guy he is and he's not.”

Detroit signed Bridgewater in March to serve as Jared Goff's backup. It would have been his third stint with the Lions.

Bridgewater entered the NFL as a first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014 and went on to play for several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 2015 Pro Bowler finishes his career with 15,182 passing yards and 75 touchdowns across 83 games.

Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer is expected to become Detroit's backup quarterback behind Goff. Campbell said the Lions also plan to add a veteran quarterback for additional depth.
