Washington Wildfires: 250,000 acres burned, state of emergency declared, prompting evacuations

Widespread wildfires burning across more than 250,000 acres in Washington state have prompted emergency declarations, mandatory evacuations, and major power outages, particularly affecting the Spokane area.

As reported by Reuters, Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and implemented a comprehensive statewide burn ban, noting that high temperatures and strong winds are drastically compounding firefighting challenges.

Eastern Washington’s largest city is heavily impacted by the Old Trails Fire, which has threatened thousands of structures.

Evacuations have been ordered for homes as well as critical infrastructure, including the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital, a waste-energy plant, and local water reclamation facilities.

Utility provider Avista reported roughly 60,000 customers without power across eastern Washington due to the fires and precautionary shutdowns.

State officials report that roughly 4,000 personnel are battling over a dozen active blazes statewide.

Among the major complex fires is the Kaiser Canyon Fire in northeastern Washington, which alone spans approximately 134,000 acres.

Total acreage burned across the state for the summer season has surpassed 450,000 acres.

Firefighters from more than a dozen states alongside the National Guard have been mobilized to assist local emergency crews.

As of the latest reports, no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed.
