A historic candy business in Texas is closing after more than 100 years, marking the end of one of the region’s oldest family-run companies.

Lammes Candies confirmed it is shutting down due to "the unprecedented economic pressures and current market conditions" of operations, according to its website.

The company had initially said its Austin flagship and Round Rock store would remain open, but local reports from KVUE indicate the Round Rock location closed on April 24.

Founded in 1885, Lammes Candies became a well known name across Central Texas, offering what it described as "high quality and most affordable chocolate and candy".

The business traces its roots to 1878, when William Wirt Lamme established the Red Front Candy Factory in Austin.

His son later repurchased the business in 1885 after it was lost in a poker game, according to KVUE.

While permanent stores are closing, the company said customers may still see pop up shops during the holiday season.

"As we navigate these challenging times together, we encourage our Central Texas community to support your local businesses now more than ever," the company said on its website.
