Luis Garcia Jr. joins Yankees in trade with Nationals

The New York Yankees have acquired infielder Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals in exchange for four right-handed pitchers, the clubs announced on Sunday.

Washington will receive Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Ben Grable and Jack Cebert as part of the deal.

Garcia, 26, is under club control through the end of next season and arrives as the Yankees look to strengthen an offense missing injured stars Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton.

The Dominican Republic international is enjoying the best season of his career, batting .283 with 23 home runs, 76 RBIs, an .873 OPS and a National League-leading .560 slugging percentage in 104 games.

Speaking after the move, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told ESPN: "He rakes. He can really hit."

Pitcher Gerrit Cole also welcomed the signing, telling ESPN: "It's one of the blessings about playing for the Yankees. The organization is always pushing forward and doing their best to improve the team whenever they get the opportunity to. As a Yankee player, it's a beautiful position to be in. You can just trust what the organization has done over the years."

Garcia has primarily played first and second base during his Major League career and is expected to provide depth and offense  as New York continues its push for the postseason.
