Stock market live today: Indian equities remained resilient in 2025 despite global headwinds and volatility, with large-caps outperforming and small-caps declining

A study by Bajaj Finserv Asset Management Limited notes that the year 2025 was marked by heightened volatility in Indian equity markets, driven by global headwinds such as shifting trade tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows. Despite these challenges, the markets demonstrated notable resilience, underpinned by strong domestic fundamentals and a decisive shift in investor dynamics.

Market Performance and the Broader Landscape

At the headline level, benchmark indices held firm through the year. The Nifty 50 delivered a return of around 9% in 2025, despite early pressure from elevated valuations, tariff-related uncertainty, FII outflows and rupee depreciation. While equity markets remained volatile, returns across other asset classes fared better, with gold and silver registering impressive gains during the year.

Market Capitalisation Trends and Investor Positioning

Performance across market capitalisation segments highlighted a clear shift in investor behaviour. Large-cap stocks provided relative stability, while broader markets faced pressure. Mid-cap indices delivered a modest return of around 5%, while small-cap indices declined by approximately 8% for the year. This divergence reflected a pronounced flight to quality, as investors favoured balance sheet strength and earnings visibility.

The Volatility Paradox: Decoding India’s Volatility Curve

Volatility played a central role in shaping market sentiment during 2025. According to Bajaj Finserv Asset Management, the India VIX crossed the 20-mark six times between January and May, signalling heightened nervousness in the first half of the year. April saw the India VIX peaking at 22.79, with President Trump’s retaliatory tariff announcements. The second half of the year was relatively calm, with the VIX remaining below 15 and averaging around 13.5, despite markets factored in rupee weakness and stalled progress on the Indo–US trade agreement.

Stock market live today: RBI rate cut to boost housing demand and credit growth, says Kunal Shah, SURE

    Kunal Shah, Co-founder, SURE

“As expected, RBI MPC has delivered a dovish cut in interest rates, acknowledging that inflation trend is much lower, if we take out impact of gold prices, realised inflation this year is only 1.5-2.0%. Leaving the rooms for one more cut in future if growth slows down.

The cut is timely and will bring relief for homebuyers, lowering EMIs and reducing total interest outflow. For a home loan of ₹50 lakhs, borrowers could now save around *₹1.80 lakh over the 20y tenure, further improving affordability and boosting housing demand.

For banks, the rate cut may compress lending margins in the short term, but it is also expected to stimulate higher credit demand, particularly in home loans, supporting overall portfolio growth. With rates continuing to soften, 2026 is shaping up to be more favourable for both borrowers and lenders”.

Stock market live today: ARC revenue mix to shift further towards recovery-linked income: Crisil Ratings

Healthy recovery cycle, rising share of cash transactions the drivers

Private asset reconstruction companies1 (ARCs) will see their revenue mix continue to tilt towards recovery-linked income—away from primarily management fee-driven income—this fiscal and the next.

There are two reasons for this. One, healthy recoveries, with redemptions expected to continue outpacing acquisitions, coupled with lower management fees in the case of new acquisitions. Two, a rising share of cash transactions.

Private ARCs saw security receipt (SR) redemptions of ~Rs 26,900 crore last fiscal and ~Rs 14,500 crore in the first half of this fiscal. However, new SR issuances declined more than a third to Rs 20,000 crore last fiscal from ~Rs 31,000 crore in fiscal 2024. In the first half of this fiscal as well, SR issuances, at ~Rs 9,600 crore, trailed redemptions.

Technicals: Gold, Silver correct sharply on margin increase; technical levels to watch ahead

Renisha Chainani, head of research at Augmont, writes - Gold and Silver retreat from highs on margin increase

    · Gold and silver experienced the biggest volatility, plunging more than $200 and $12 in a single day from their highs, respectively. The severity of silver’s slide was exacerbated by the CME’s decision to boost overnight margin requirements to $25,000—the second rise this month. This modification most likely caused forced liquidations among leveraged traders, resulting in position closures independent of individual market outlooks.

    · Following a meeting between the presidents of the United States and Ukraine at Mar-a-Lago, there was some tentative hope about prospective peace negotiations. However, this cautious optimism was dashed when Russian President Vladimir Putin notified President Donald Trump on Monday that Moscow would reconsider its negotiation position following what the Kremlin described as a Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian presidential palace. This conflicting geopolitical signal added more anxiety to an already tumultuous trading session.

    · Separately, Trump threatened of future strikes against Iran if nuclear development proceeds, while also revealing that the US has hit a drug-related facility in Venezuela.

    Technical Triggers

    · Gold prices are expected to consolidate in the range of $4300 (~Rs 134,000) and $4400 (~Rs 136,500) after this sharp sell off.

    · Silver prices are expected to consolidate between $70 (~Rs 223,000) and $75 (~Rs 237,000), after the sharp sell off.

Although this will be a gradual launch across the store network, we believe the initiative will further strengthen the trust associated with the Tanishq brand

    Nuvama on Titan

    Buy, TP Rs 4672

Attended inaugural beYon store launch—House of Titan’s new venture.

    Key highlights:

    i) The collection features LGDs (VS clarity, F-G colour) set in typically 14K and 18K gold.

ii) Targeted at adornment focused daily and casual wear with cuts being the main differentiator.

iii) No buyback policy is there for lab-grown diamonds.

iv) Making charges range from INR1,800–2,000 per gram.

Purchases include a proprietary in-house certificate documenting diamond specifications

    Investec on Petronet LNG

    Buy, TP Rs 400

    Top pick for 2026

Global LNG supply is set to rise sharply in 2026 (7% or 40 bcm), fastest growth since 2019

This surge -- driven primarily by US, Canada, Qatar, and African producers –far exceeds demand growth and keeps spot prices under pressure

This benign pricing environment comes at an opportune time for India, where LNG imports fell in FY25 due to temporary factors that are now stabilizing.

Lower spot prices should help revive price-sensitive industrial demand from early 2026.

Against this backdrop, PLNG is strategically well positioned: its Dahej expansion to 22.5mmtpa is complete, its contracted volumes provide strong downside protection, and superior connectivity should help capture incremental spot volumes as prices soften.

After an 18% correction over the past year on cyclical import weakness, PLNG now trades below its historical valuation band, offering an attractive entry point.

A prolonged global LNG glut likely to structurally lift India’s LNG imports over the next 3–5 years, driving earnings growth and valuation re-rating

    MS on Shriram Fin

    OW, TP Rs 925

CARE Ratings upgrades longterm credit rating to AAA

Will watch for potential actions from other rating agencies as well

These could result in a meaningful reduction in borrowing costs for Shriram & catalyze higher long-term loan growth & better loan spreads

    CLSA on Dixon Tech

O-P, TP cut to Rs 15800 from Rs 18800

Dixon’s near-term growth trajectory looks clouded given tapering smartphone sales in India and market share losses for its key customers

Expect largely flat YoY top-line growth in 3Q (and a QoQ decline), paving way for a FY26 guidance cut

Interactions with investors also indicate concerns around regulatory approvals, which will be key to watch

That said, remain constructive on medium term growth, & hence despite cuts to FY26-27CL earnings, FY28CL EPS is largely unchanged

    CLSA on India Economics

    An Eventful end to 2025

Govt passes important bills and RBI injects liquidity

Budget constrains expected to be eased for Central Government

10-year yield bonds expected to be brought down towards 6.5% vs peak of 6.65%

Cumulative Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) in FY26 stands at ₹3.3 tn, close to the all-time high of ₹3.8 tn in FY24

Believe the steep trajectory of AoNs since FY23 implies that the pace of ordering is likely to accelerate

Expect Solar Industries, Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics to be the key beneficiaries, while trickle-down benefits are likely to accrue for Astra Microwave and Data Patterns as well

    MOSL on Defence

DAC clears ₹79,000 cr in capital acquisition proposals in the winter session

FY26 YTD approvals at ~₹3.3 tn, nearly 2× the defence capital outlay of ₹1.8 tn

Approvals cover munitions, missiles, air defence, surveillance, training systems and naval platforms

Stock market live today: Nifty, Sensex end lower amid expiry volatility and FII outflows, says Vikram Kasat, PL Capital

Markets by Mr. Vikram Kasat, Head - Advisory, PL Capital

Indian equity markets ended Monday’s session on a weak note, as traders remained cautious ahead of the December derivatives expiry amid subdued year-end volumes and continued foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows.

The Nifty 50 slipped below the 25,950 mark, closing nearly 100 points lower, while the Sensex fell 346 points to settle at 84,695. The Bank Nifty also ended in the red, down 79 points, slipping below the 59,000 level. Weakness extended to the broader markets, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices declining around 0.5% each.

Volatility picked up after several muted sessions. India VIX rose over 6% to 9.72, signalling a modest increase in near-term uncertainty as market participants positioned cautiously ahead of expiry-related developments.

On the sectoral front, metal stocks failed to hold on to early gains, retreating from intraday highs as global prices corrected. Selling pressure was also visible across financials, IT, realty, healthcare and consumption-linked stocks, reflecting a risk-averse undertone.

Railway stocks witnessed profit booking after recent sharp rallies, with IRFC and RVNL sliding close to 5% each. In contrast, Nifty Media, FMCG and PSU indices managed to close marginally higher, supported by selective buying in defensive and energy-related names.

Oil marketing companies advanced as crude oil prices eased, providing relief to the sector. Meanwhile, HFCL, NCC and Titagarh Rail Systems ended higher, gaining between 2% and 5%, ahead of their exclusion from the futures and options segment.

Among Nifty 50 constituents, Tata Steel, Tata Consumer Products, Asian Paints and Grasim were the top gainers, while Adani Ports, Power Grid, HCL Technologies, Trent, BEL and Bharti Airtel featured among the key losers.

In the commodities space, gold and silver saw some profit booking after scaling record highs in recent sessions.

Going ahead, expiry-related volatility, FII activity, global cues and signals from the Fed minutes will be closely tracked.

Economy watch: IIP Data by Mahendra Patil, Founder and Managing Partner, MP Financial Advisory Services LLP

“The sharp rebound in IIP growth to 6.7% in November reflects a broad-based recovery, led by manufacturing, particularly in basic metals, pharmaceuticals, and automobiles. The strength in capital goods and infrastructure-related output points to improving investment activity, while the decline in electricity generation largely reflects post-festive normalization rather than a slowdown in underlying industrial demand.”

“2025 was a year of sustained growth for Indian real estate, driven by strong housing absorption, firm pricing, and the delivery of major infrastructure projects across key metros. Demand remained fundamentally end-user focused, supported by rising incomes and formal job creation, while consolidation accelerated as customers increasingly chose branded developers for transparency and execution certainty.

As we step into 2026, the sector is poised for stable, broad-based growth, underpinned by disciplined supply and a healthier demand–inventory balance. With multiple infrastructure projects nearing completion and urban employment drivers remaining robust, we expect momentum to continue anchored in genuine homeownership aspirations rather than speculative activity.”

Economy watch: Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA Ltd. on the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data

“While the year-on-year (YoY) growth in the IIP surged to a 25-month high of 6.7% in November 2025 from 0.5% in October 2025, this upswing largely reflects the shift in the festive calendar, restocking after the festive season sales, as well as some normalisation in activity across the mining and electricity segments following the excess unseasonal rains in the previous month.

Despite the demand boost spurred by GST rationalisation, IIP growth averaged at 3.6% during October-November FY2026, lower than the 4.3% expansion seen in Q2 FY2026, led by a weaker performance of the electricity sector.

Notably, while manufacturing growth quadrupled to 8.0% in November 2025 from 2.0% in October, the average for these months was largely unchanged at ~5.0%, in line with the Q2 FY2026 print. Among the use-based categories, only two of the six segments -consumer non-durables and capital goods output – saw an improvement in their growth rates in October-November vis-à-vis Q2 FY2026. While growth in infra/construction goods slowed between these periods, it remained quite strong, which along with the healthy growth in capital goods output suggests that investment activity likely remained robust.

Interestingly, average growth in consumer non-durables remained dull at 1.3% in October-November 2025, trailing the 4.3% rise in consumer durables.

The impact of the US tariffs and penalties is likely to reflect across some of the manufacturing segments, partly offsetting the positive impact of the GST rate rejig. However, electricity demand has expanded in December 2025 after a gap of two months, which should boost power generation in the month, auguring well for IIP growth in the month. We expect the IIP growth to ease to 3.5-5.0% in December 2025, as the base effect normalises and the benefit from restocking wanes.”

Stock market live today: Sensex slips below 85,000; near-term outlook cautious with resistance at 85,200 and support at 84,200, says Aakash Shah, Choice Equity Broking

Aakash Shah, Research Analyst, Choice Equity Broking.

“On 29 Dec 2025, the Sensex lost momentum and closed lower, reflecting a continuation of recent corrective price action as year-end liquidity remained thin and profit-taking dominated. The index shed approximately 0.4 % and slipped below key intra-day resistance near the 85,000 zone, indicating short-term selling pressure and a lack of follow-through buying after earlier attempts to reclaim higher levels.

From a technical perspective, the Sensex traded below its 20-day moving average, reinforcing near-term bearish bias, while the failure to sustain above the 85,000 band suggests a potential shift toward consolidation or further correction. Immediate resistance for the index is now placed near 85,100–85,200 with a break above this zone needed to revive upside momentum. On the downside, 84,200–84,300 represents the first significant support zone, followed by the 84,000 area, where buyers may re-emerge to absorb selling pressure.

Sectorally, weakness was broad-based, with IT and heavyweight banking names among the laggards on the day, while only a handful of stocks managed modest gains, underscoring uneven participation across the benchmark.”
