Chennai Super Kings lose Jamie Overton at crucial stage of IPL 2026
by Naman Jain · Inside Sport IndiaJamie Overton was CSK's middle-over enforcer all season, with him troubling batters with quick, hard-length deliveries in IPL 2026.
It feels like the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) IPL 2026 squad is a bit cursed. Just when it looked like they were gathering momentum at the right stage of IPL 2026, another injury has arrived to derail their plans. As many as four players have already been ruled out for CSK, and now Jamie Overton’s campaign is effectively over too.
England all-rounder Jamie Overton has returned to the United Kingdom after suffering a right-thigh injury. This is a serious blow to CSK’s already stretched squad ahead of the business end of the tournament. While the franchise stopped short of officially ruling him out for the season, the chances of Overton returning for Chennai’s final three league matches appear extremely slim.
CSK confirmed the development on social media on Wednesday night. “Jamie Overton has a right thigh injury and will be returning to the UK for further assessment and management,” the franchise stated.
Overton was becoming one of CSK’s most important players
Overton’s injury has come at a worst time for CSK. While it is the business end of the tournament, and Overton has noticeably been one of CSK’s standout performers this season. The Englishman has picked up 14 wickets at an average of 17.78 and an economy rate below nine, making him Chennai’s second-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2026.
Only a couple of days ago, he was the Player of the Match against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk after producing a match-winning spell of 3/36 in a five-wicket victory. With the bat, he also has 136 runs at a strike rate close to 160.

| Matches | Wickets | Average | Economy | Best Figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | 14 | 17.78 | 8.89 | 3/36 |
What made Overton especially valuable was his flexibility. He could bowl in the powerplay, hit hard lengths through the middle overs, and provide lower-order hitting as well. In a season where Chennai have constantly shuffled combinations due to injuries, Overton had become one of the few certainties in the XI.
Now CSK suddenly have another major hole to fill before crucial games against Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings.
CSK’s IPL 2026 injury list is becoming absurd
Overton’s injury is only the latest addition to what has been a brutal season physically for Chennai Super Kings.
Nathan Ellis was ruled out even before the tournament began with a hamstring issue. Khaleel Ahmed then suffered a quadricep injury. Young batter Ayush Mhatre tore his hamstring midway through the season, while Ramakrishna Ghosh fractured his foot on IPL debut.
Dewald Brevis missed the first three matches with a side strain, and Spencer Johnson has struggled with a back stress fracture. Most notably, MS Dhoni has not played a single match this season because of a persistent calf strain.
