Karl Lagerfeld Spring 2027: New Angles

The late Karl Lagerfeld loved the Casa Malaparte so much that in 1997 he spent five days taking Polaroids of the austere, brick-red villa perched on a cliff near Capri, which Steidl published into a very collectible book.

Knowing about the founder’s love of contemporary architecture, Hun Kim, the brand’s head of design, used Casa Malaparte as a jumping off point for a graphic, clean-lined spring collection hinged largely on black and white, with a few pops of terracotta.

In the stiff, accordion pleats of a convertible trenchcoat, and a one-sleeve white shirt hemmed on a slant, you could feel an echo of the villa’s famous reverse pyramidal stairs that lead to the roof patio.

Come to think of it, the swag of fabric falling in a scarf point from the front of one of his off-the-shoulder jackets could be seen as a representation of the famous curving wall that punctuates that patio.

As always, Kim exalted the soigné side of the brand, exemplified by evening trenchcoats in meaty satin or gauzy tulle, tuxedo-adjacent trousers and white shirts set off with exaggerated cuffs, puff sleeves or a feathery fall of sequin fringe.

Lagerfeld was known to wear white denim when in the Riviera, which Hun interpreted as a white jeans skirt gleaming with transparent sequins like trousers.

He also added a zebra print, but “we intentionally cut it to make it a little bit more geometric than just a regular animal print.”

It’s been a big week for the brand, which also hosted a party for its campaign face Paris Hilton.
