In the wake of the tragic announcement, fans bombarded the update with their tributes, sharing their shock and heartache over the news. A dismayed fan commented: "Please don't tell me he passed away."

Another sought confirmation, writing: "tell me it's not true," while others were left to simply express: "rip liam."

Payne's journey to stardom began with the pop ensemble One Direction, which was assembled on the X Factor. His first foray into the ITV talent spectacle came in 2008 as a lone performer.

Although his initial attempt fell short, he made a comeback on the show's 2010 iteration, where he, alongside Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, was crafted into what would become one of the most illustrious boy bands of all time.

The former One Direction member, who was soaking up the sun in Buenos Aires with his partner Kate Cassidy, met a tragic end after falling from the third floor of a hotel. La Nacion reports that the 31 year old suffered the fall in the affluent area of Palermo.

The grim find of a body in the inner courtyard of the hotel led staff to immediately contact the emergency services.

Speaking for the city's ambulance service, Alberto Crescenti confirmed that the man had plummeted approximately 40 metres and had sustained "severe injuries which were incompatible with life."

In a discussion with TN, the chief of the local ambulance service revealed: "At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel."

He went on to say: "At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation."

Of late, Liam had been documenting his trip to Argentina online, which included joining the audience at a show by Niall, another ex-member of One Direction. Liam gained global stardom at the tender age of 16 as part of the ensemble that would become the foremost boyband on the planet.
