‘You Can See Everything’ becomes surprise box office hit with $15 million opening
HOLLYWOOD - “You Can See Everything,” Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s almost three-hour long documentary about Theranos founder and convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes was a surprise hit at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, grossing an estimated $15 million, according to early numbers reported by the Hollywood trade publications—despite opening at less than 1,000 theaters.
The documentary features an intimate look at the Theranos founder in the days before she reported to a federal prison for her more than 11-year sentence after being found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy.
The $15 million windfall also makes it the second-biggest debut for a documentary in domestic box office history, behind only Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which debuted with $23.9 million in 2004.
Paramount’s “Street Fighter,” an action film adaptation of the beloved video game franchise, also debuted this weekend and scored the top spot at the domestic box office with a gross of about $31 million in North America. “You Can See Everything” came in second place, while “Other Mommy,” a horror film starring Jessica Chastain, grossed roughly $8.3 million over its second weekend in theaters for third place.
