Subnautica 2 update kicks off creature tweaks by making Marrowbreaches and Nibblers more dangerous, but easier to outfox

Unknown Worlds' fish changes have begun to arrive, following that big killing debate

· Rock Paper Shotgun

Last week, Subnautica 2 developers Unknown Worlds held their hands up and said that players seeking a means to kill dangerous fish was down to the survival game's tools for avoiding and outfoxing such creatures not feeling as effective as they should. Cue tweaks to creatures and their behaviour aimed at addressing the issue, which have started to arrive with Sub 2's latest hotfix.

Said hotfix is Subnuatica 2's third since its early access release, and began to roll out late yesterday. In addition to fixes and upgrades for the DLSS tools the game offers, Unknown Worlds have made a bunch of tweaks to three underwater enemies: Hammerheads, Marrowbreaches, and Nibblers.

First off, the Marrowbreaches and Nibblers have had their overall damage upped, but this increase in deadliness is counteracted by a number of measures designed to aid your ability to avoid getting up close and personal with them. Marrowbreaches, for instance, have had their attacks spaced out to ensure you run into them less frequently. Nibblers, meanwhile, have had their perception range dialled down, will circle you longer before they attack, now generally move more slowly, and are more sensitive to your multitool.

While they haven't gotten a damage buff, Hammerheads have also been made easier to duck via Unknown Worlds ensuring they'll no longer attack unpiloted Tadpoles and fixing an issue that'd see them ignore flares. All of that should hopefully make it feel as though you've got enough options to avoid becoming fish food without the need to dish out some punishment of your own.

Folks keen for a more direct solution might still not be satiated, but the studio are at least making an effort to shape Sub 2 into something that feels fair to everyone, while sticking to their vision for it. Underwater violence cravers can, of course turn to mods if they fancy.
