US President Donald Trump told the nation in a televised speech on Wednesday night (Apr 1) that the US military had nearly accomplished its goals in Iran, but he declined to offer a concrete timeline for winding down the conflict.

"Tonight, I'm pleased to say that these core strategic objectives are nearing completion," Trump said in his first primetime address since the start of the conflict in late February.

"In these past four weeks, our armed forces have delivered swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield - victories like few people have ever seen before." 

He offered few new details, spending much of his speech repeating things he had already said in recent weeks.

Asian markets fell after Trump said the US would continue to hit targets in the Islamic Republic over the next two to three weeks, adding that the US would finish the job "very fast".
