College football odds, picks, lines, predictions for Week 9, 2024: Proven model backs Penn State, Michigan

SportsLine's advanced computer model has revealed its 2024 Week 9 college football picks

· CBS Sports

No. 15 Alabama has zero wiggle room if it wants to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive heading into its matchup against No. 21 Missouri during the Week 9 college football schedule. The Crimson Tide have lost two of their last three games, including a 24-17 loss at then-No. 11 Tennessee last week. They still have opportunities to improve their resume this week and at No. 8 LSU in their following game, but they could need some help to stay in the national championship hunt. Alabama is a 13.5-point favorite in the Week 9 college football odds, even though Missouri has won six of its first seven games this season.

There are four more ranked vs. ranked matchups on Saturday, including No. 8 LSU (+2.5) at No. 14 Texas A&M in a crucial SEC showdown. The other top-25 games are No. 24 Navy (+12.5) vs. No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 25 Vanderbilt (+18.5) vs. No. 5 Texas and No. 1 Oregon (-21.5) vs. No. 20 Illinois in the 3:30 p.m. ET CBS game. Before locking in any Week 9 college football picks on those games or others, be sure to see the latest college football predictions from SportsLine's proven model.

The model simulates every FBS college football game 10,000 times. Since its inception, it has generated a betting profit of well over $2,000 for $100 players on its top-rated college spread football picks, and it is a sizzling 14-7 on all top-rated picks over the past four weeks of this season. Anyone following at sportsbooks and on betting apps has seen strong returns.

Now, it has turned its attention to the latest college football odds and Week 9 college football betting lines. Head here to see every pick.

Top college football predictions for Week 9

One of the college picks the model is high on during Week 9: Michigan (-3.5) cruises to a blowout win over Michigan State in a 7:30 p.m. ET matchup on Saturday. Michigan State is coming off a win over Iowa, but it did not fare well in its previous two games. The Spartans were blown out by Ohio State and Oregon, losing those games by a combined final score of 69-17.

Michigan has not lost a home game since falling to then-No. 3 Texas in early September, so it will be happy to return to the Big House following a two-game road trip. The Wolverines have a strong rushing attack powered by senior running back Kalel Mullings, who has 676 rushing yards and seven touchdowns this season. They are facing a Michigan State defense that ranks outside the top 50 nationally in rushing yards allowed per game, which is one reason why the model has Michigan covering the spread in well over 70% of simulations. See the rest of its Week 9 college football picks here.

Another prediction: No. 3 Penn State (-6.5) takes care of business at Wisconsin in a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday. The Nittany Lions have quietly been one of the top teams in the country throughout the season, remaining unbeaten with a 33-30 overtime win at USC two weeks ago. They had an extra week to prepare for this game following that contest, while Wisconsin is returning home following back-to-back road games.

Penn State junior quarterback Drew Allar has completed more than 70% of his passes for 1,492 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen have both gone over 400 rushing yards. Their balanced attack is going to cause issues for a Wisconsin defense that gave up 80 combined points in losses to Alabama and USC earlier this season. SportsLine's model has Penn State scoring nearly 30 points on Saturday, helping the Nittany Lions cover the spread in well over 60% of simulations. See picks for every other game in Week 9 here.
