MONROVIA — Competitive domestic football returns to Liberia this weekend as the Liberia Football Association (LFA) officially kicks off its 2026/27 league season across the men’s and women’s divisions following months of intense preseason preparations.

The opening fixtures begin Friday, October 16, with the women’s First Division taking to the pitch before the men’s First and Second Division competitions launch on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.

The new campaign brings renewed expectations for clubs, players, supporters, and administrators competing for top honors and seeking to establish their dominance in the national football hierarchy.

Beyond the initial kickoff excitement, the season presents a critical test for the LFA as it aims to strengthen domestic competitions, improve the matchday experience, and address longstanding issues surrounding club financing and player welfare.

Men’s First Division Opens Saturday

The men’s First Division campaign gets underway on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., when Golden Dream faces Wologizi FC at Tusa Field.

Action continues Sunday with a full slate of fixtures across several venues

Discoveries Sports Academy vs. Downtown FC Gompa Stadium (3:00 p.m.)

Watanga FC vs. Gardnersville FC — TSF Stadium (4:00 p.m.)

Fassell FC vs. District 17 Football Academy — SKD Annex (4:00 p.m.)

LISCR FC vs. Shaita FC — Blue Field (4:00 p.m.)

Borough FC vs. Heaven Eleven D. Twe Field, New Kru Town (4:00 p.m.)

Other Sunday fixtures feature LPRC Oilers, take on Freeport FC, Paynesville FC face NPA Anchors, while Bea Mountain, and Black Man Warriors will come face to face.

While opening results offer an early glimpse of form, squad depth and consistency will prove crucial over the marathon campaign.

Watanga FC Begins Title Defence

Reigning champions Watanga FC enter the campaign carrying the weight of title defence.

Their Sunday match against Gardnersville FC provides an immediate test of whether their preseason work can translate into competitive results.

Watanga will face steep competition from top contenders like LISCR FC, FC Fassell, Bea Mountain, LPRC Oilers, and Paynesville FC, all eyeing the championship trophy.

Women’s First Division Kicks Off Friday

Women’s football spearheads the return of league action on Friday, October 16.

Reigning champions Determine Girls square off against rivals Shaita Angels at the SKD Annex on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in one of the most anticipated opening fixtures.

Friday’s other Women’s First Division matches include Tap Tap FC vs. Real Muja

Monrovia Queens vs. Small Town Academy

Ravia Angels vs. Republic FC

World Girls vs. Senior Female Pro and Bushrod Queens vs. Rover Ladies

Rounding out the opening round, Kneeling Warriors will face Earth Angels at Tusa Field on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.

The continued growth of the women’s league remains vital to domestic sport, providing a direct pipeline for local talent to earn national team call-ups and international visibility.

Second Division Action and Financial Realities

The men’s Second Division also resumes on Saturday across key grounds, including the SKD Annex, D. Twe Field, Gompa Stadium, Blue Field, and TSF Stadium.

While the division provides a pathway for promotion, clubs continue to operate under tight financial constraints.

Transport, equipment, medical care, and player compensation remain ongoing struggles for lower-tier management.

To cushion these challenges, the LFA approved a US$150,000 support package distributed across six divisions. The intervention comes after two consecutive seasons without a primary title sponsor for domestic league competitions.

While the funds offer immediate relief, stakeholders emphasize that long-term sustainability requires stable corporate sponsorship, improved club governance, and robust infrastructure.

A Season of High Stakes

As the opening whistle blows, Liberian football enters a critical phase. For Watanga FC and Determine Girls, the goal is retention; for challengers, it is disruption.

The true success of the 2026/27 season, however, will be measured both by the action on the pitch and by the LFA’s ability to maintain administrative stability, fair officiating, and player welfare across all divisions.
