Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: Because “Elite” Apparently Wasn’t Dramatic Enough

Qualcomm is expected to launch two flagship smartphone processors in 2026 instead of its usual single top-tier platform. While the company has already confirmed that two “8 Elite” chips will be introduced later this year, a new leak may have revealed their potential marketing names.

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the processor identified internally as SM8950 could launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The more advanced SM8975 variant may reportedly be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.

That naming would replace earlier speculation that Qualcomm’s higher-end chip would be marketed as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Qualcomm has not yet confirmed the final branding, so the names should still be treated as unverified.

Two 2nm flagship chips expected

Both processors are expected to use TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process, which would mark Qualcomm’s first flagship mobile chips built on this node. The previous Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 generation was based on a 3nm process.

A move to 2nm should, in theory, improve power efficiency and deliver stronger performance. That could help phone makers offer better sustained speeds, longer battery life and reduced heat under heavy workloads such as gaming, on-device AI tasks, high-resolution video recording and image processing.

However, a smaller manufacturing node alone does not guarantee better real-world results. Final performance will depend on clock speeds, thermal management, memory bandwidth, software optimisation and the cooling systems used by smartphone manufacturers.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6: Rumoured specifications

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to use an octa-core CPU layout built around Qualcomm’s Oryon cores. The reported arrangement is 2+3+3, consisting of two prime cores, three performance cores and three efficiency-focused cores.

Leaks also point to a shared 16MB L2 cache and an Adreno 845 GPU. The graphics processor could feature a six-slice design, 12MB of GMEM graphics memory and 6MB of system-level cache.

The standard chip is also expected to support LPDDR5X memory and UFS 5.0 storage, preparing it for the next generation of premium Android smartphones.

Extreme model could push mobile performance further

The rumored Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 may use the same broad platform foundation but pair it with substantially more powerful graphics hardware.

It is expected to feature the Adreno 850 GPU with 18MB of dedicated GMEM. That would represent an approximately 50% increase in graphics memory capacity and GPU bus width compared with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

The higher-end chip may additionally support LPDDR6 memory alongside LPDDR5X. Some reports also suggest clock speeds approaching 5GHz, which would be a first for a smartphone chipset if Qualcomm can make it work without turning flagship phones into portable hand warmers.

A more powerful GPU, wider memory bandwidth and faster RAM could make the Extreme version particularly attractive for gaming phones, Ultra-branded flagships and devices marketed around intensive AI features.

Snapdragon Summit takes place in September

Qualcomm has confirmed that its Snapdragon Summit will be held in Hawaii from September 22 to September 24. The event is taking place earlier than the company’s more typical October schedule, suggesting that smartphone manufacturers may be able to launch devices with the new chips before the end of the year.

The move to two flagship processors would represent a strategic change for Qualcomm. Rather than offering phone makers a single top-end chip, the company could provide a standard flagship platform and a more powerful Extreme version for devices at the very top of the market.

That approach would give smartphone brands more flexibility to separate their premium lineups by performance, graphics capabilities and price. It could also make 2026 flagship comparisons more complicated, as two phones carrying Snapdragon 8 Elite branding may no longer deliver the same level of performance.

With the Snapdragon Summit still several weeks away, further details about CPU design, imaging capabilities, AI hardware and final GPU performance are likely to appear before Qualcomm makes the chips official.
