Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez return as Charles, Oliver and Mabel in Hulu's beloved murder-mystery series. The story continues after the tragic death of Arconia's doorman Lester, with the NYC apartment building now attracting secret billionaires, old-school mobsters and mysterious residents.

“The trio discovers a deeper divide between their storied city they thought they knew and the new New York evolving around them — one where the old mob fights to hold on as newer, even more dangerous players emerge,” the synopsis reads.

In an interview with The Wrap, co-creator John Hoffman revealed that the fifth season will explore themes of old and contemporary New York.

“Season 5 will hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now, in ways that honestly we couldn’t have even predicted,” he explained, adding that “classic meets modern” will be carried through in “a very big way” in Season 5.

How Does Only Murders In The Building Season 4 End?

The fourth season of Only Murders In The Building ends with the trio solving the murder of Sazz Pataki, Charles-Haden Savage’s dear friend and stunt double from Brazzos. It turns out that Sazz was the one who wrote the Only Murders script, but it was stolen from her.

Sazz brought the script to Marshall seeking feedback from a fellow aspiring screenwriter. Jealous of how good the script was, Marshall took it and sold it to Bev Melon, claiming it as his own work. When Sazz went to New York to tell Charles about the script, Marshall knew he could access the West Tower of the Arconia because she had written a Dudenoff subplot in her script. He used a sniper rifle to kill her from Dudenoff's apartment. Being a stuntman, he scaled along the window ledge around the Arconia's courtyard and disposed of Sazz's body down the trash chute.

Marshall then tried to kill stuntman Glen Stubbins, who could identify him after working together on Project Ronkonkoma, but he accidentally shot Galifianakis at the promotional photo shoot. Later, Marshall went to finish the job and murdered Stubbins while he was recovering at the hospital.

Marshall later confesses everything to Charles, Oliver, and Mabel before attempting to kill them. Thankfully, Marshall is shot through the window of Charles’ apartment by Jan, who had escaped prison and been living in the secret passageways of the Arconia. After Oliver and Loretta tie the knot, the trio discovers the dead body of Arconia doorman Lester in the courtyard fountain.

In Season 5, Téa Leoni is joining the cast as Sofia Caccimelio, the wife of Nicky Caccimelio, a missing person with ties to the Caputo crime family. In the Season 4 finale, she approaches Charles, Oliver and Mabel to investigate her husband’s disappearance. “What happened to Nicky has everything to do with this building,” she says.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” Hoffman told Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital."
