According to AS, which cited anonymous sources, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has decided head coach Carlo Ancelotti's immediate future in the wake of a harrowing 5-2 defeat to bitter rival FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.

With the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup already in the bag, Los Blancos looked as though they could be on their way to a third title this term when Kylian Mbappe wrong-footed Alejandro Balde and fired a shot past Wojciech Szczesny inside five minutes.

By half time, though, thanks to the genius of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, Madrid trailed 4-1 and finished the tie having lost both the match by a scoreline of 5-2 as well as the Super Cup title it snatched from Barca a year ago.

Post-match, Ancelotti slammed his men for "not playing soccer" in the first half, as well as defending so poorly.

"I understand the sadness of the fans and I’m very sorry," Ancelotti said in his post-match press conference. "But we have to look ahead, look to the next game and continue with the dynamic we had until this one.

"I don’t have anything (positive) to take away from this game," he admitted. "Just the game Mbappe played. He made some good plays, he scored the goal… We have to forget about the rest and look forward."

Seemingly boasting short memories and forgetting all Ancelotti has achieved over the past year, which includes a treble sealed in 2023/2024 which contained a record 15th Champions League crown, some Madrid supporters have demanded that the Italian is dismissed post-haste.

According to AS, though, that won't happen any time soon - even though confidence in the coach has "deteriorated".

Perez is against making drastic changes mid-season and there is also a lack of replacement options out there on the market.

Furthermore, it is widely believed that he already has a summer substitution ready and waiting in the form of Bayer Leverkusen tactician and former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Ancelotti has a contract until mid-2026, but the mentioned Spanish newspaper writes that he is now entering a sort of "trial period" which begins with Thursday's Copa del Rey last 16 clash against Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu.
