Google Updates Android 15 On Millions Of Pixel Phones
by Zak Doffman · ForbesNew year, new warning. Pixel owners who have upgraded to Android 15 are being urged to update their devices now. Google has just released multiple critical fixes to stop “remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed.” While no reports of active attacks yet, this is how it begins. Those vulnerabilities all threaten Android’s core system and need to be patched immediately.
Google has confirmed that “we have started to roll out the monthly software update for January 2025. All supported Pixel devices running Android 15 will receive these software updates starting today, and the rollout will continue over the next week in phases, depending on carrier and device.” Not all this month’s updates are relevant for Android 15, but most are per Google’s bulletin.
Android’s January security update is also available for Samsung’s newest S24 flagship. The stark difference, of course, is that those Samsungs do not yet have Android 15 unlike their Pixel equivalents. Pixel users will be notified when the system update is available for their device. “We encourage you to check your Android version,” Google says, “and update to receive the latest software.”
Perhaps of more note to those who have upgraded to Android 15 will be latest beta for Android 15’s Quarterly Platform Release. Android Authority reports that beyond January’s security fixes, “there’s also a separate track of Android development that’s been underway simultaneously, getting things ready for the first Pixel Drop of 2025, anticipated for March. Eager testers have been able to get an early taste of that update by registering to try out the Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) 2 beta, and today Google’s dropping its latest batch of bug fixes.”

Pixel owners continue to have an advantage over Samsung owners when it comes to security updates, not only does the process appear faster and more efficient, but it also benefits from Google’s control of its entire hardware and software ecosystem.
While Samsung often finds itself lagging, the Galaxy-maker is finally bringing seamless updates to its users with next month’s release of the Galaxy S25 series. But like many other features these days, Pixel got there first.
