Ottawa: A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence left 10 people dead, including the suspected shooter, and more than two dozen injured in one of the deadliest school-related attacks in Canada in decades.
Police said six victims were found dead inside the school, while another succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital. Two additional victims were discovered at a local residence believed to be connected to the incident. The suspected shooter, identified as a woman, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the school.
Authorities reported that between 25 and 27 people were injured, including at least two with life-threatening injuries. Several victims were airlifted to larger medical facilities for treatment.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received reports of an active shooter at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time. An emergency alert was issued, prompting lockdowns across the small northeastern British Columbia community. The alert was lifted later in the evening after officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat.
Tumbler Ridge, a remote town of about 2,000 to 2,400 residents near the Alberta border, is home to roughly 160 to 175 students at the secondary school. The scale of the tragedy has deeply shaken the tight-knit community.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” by the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the shooting as a “devastating and unimaginable tragedy.”
Investigators said the motive remains under investigation and confirmed that no other suspects are believed to be involved. Authorities indicated that updates would follow as the inquiry continues. (Agencies)
