NEW DELHI, May 14: India has prohibited the export of sugar with immediate effect till September 30, 2026, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

The DGFT said the export policy for raw, white and refined sugar has been amended from “Restricted” to “Prohibited” until September 30 or further orders, whichever is earlier.

However, the ban will not apply to sugar exports to the European Union and the United States under the tariff rate quota scheme. It also excludes shipments under the advance authorisation scheme, government-to-government exports and consignments already in the physical export pipeline.

The notification was issued on May 13, formalising the government’s decision to curb outbound shipments of the commodity. (Agencies)
