Caracas, Jun 26: The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen to 235, with more than 1,500 people injured as rescue teams continue searching through the rubble for survivors.

The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck near the capital Caracas on Thursday within seconds of each other. Both tremors occurred at a shallow depth, worsening the scale of destruction across the affected areas.

In Caracas and the nearby coastal city of La Guaira, people were heard calling for help from beneath collapsed buildings as emergency responders raced against time to rescue those trapped under the debris.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency as rescue and relief operations continue across the affected regions.

Several countries have pledged assistance for the relief efforts. Rodríguez acknowledged India’s solidarity following the disaster and welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s message expressing condolences and India’s readiness to support Venezuela’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s social media post, Rodríguez expressed gratitude for the international support and solidarity extended to Venezuela in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes. (Agencies)
