According to law enforcement officials, a shooter opened fire outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where the event was being held. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
All dignitaries under the protection of the United States Secret Service were swiftly evacuated. Trump was escorted off stage amid chaos, briefly stumbling before being assisted by agents.
A law enforcement officer was reportedly struck in a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to be safe.
The incident caused panic inside the venue, with hundreds of guests, including journalists, taking cover under tables as security personnel rushed in.
The dinner was immediately cancelled and will be rescheduled, said Weijia Jiang, president of the correspondents’ association.
Authorities have not yet disclosed details about the suspect or motive, and investigations are ongoing.
