New Delhi, Jul 14: A Delhi court on Tuesday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four others for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh pronounced the verdict in the case involving 11 accused, holding Hussain and four co-accused guilty of offences including murder, promoting enmity, rioting, assault and use of criminal force.

The case stems from an FIR registered at Dayalpur police station on a complaint filed by Ankit Sharma’s father, Ravinder Kumar, following the killing of the 26-year-old IB officer during the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020.

Hussain, who was an AAP councillor at the time, was suspended by the party after his name surfaced in the investigation.

The riots claimed 53 lives, left hundreds injured and caused property damage worth several crores across the affected areas of northeast Delhi.

A Delhi court had framed charges against Hussain and 10 others in March 2023, paving the way for the trial. The court has now convicted five of the accused, while the remaining accused were dealt with separately as per the proceedings. (Agencies)
