Srinagar, Jan 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the long-awaited Z-Morh Tunnel at Sonamarg, a significant infrastructure project aimed at ensuring year-round accessibility to the region. The inauguration ceremony, held at the East Portal of the tunnel, was attended by Union Ministers Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and other dignitaries.

The 6.5-kilometer-long Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to overcome the seasonal challenges that have historically made Sonamarg inaccessible during harsh winters, providing a vital link between Srinagar and Leh. The tunnel’s completion promises to facilitate uninterrupted travel, boosting tourism and local economy.

Work on the Z-Morh Tunnel began in May 2015, but the project faced delays due to financial issues with the initial contractor, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS), which ceased operations in 2018. The project was re-tendered in 2019 and awarded to APCO Infratech in January 2020. Initially projected for completion by 2016-2017, the Rs 2,716.90 crore tunnel has now been finished, marking a milestone for regional connectivity.

Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister, along with Union Ministers and other officials, toured the tunnel before proceeding to the main venue. The completion of this project is expected to enhance transportation efficiency and connectivity in the region, benefiting both residents and travelers.
