ITR Filings For AY 2026-27 Cross 7.8 Crore, Set New Record
by Northlines · NorthlinesNEW DELHI, Sep 1: A record over 7.8 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for assessment year 2026-27 till August 31, the Income Tax Department said on Tuesday.
The department said the latest figure marks a new high in ITR filings, with more than 7.8 crore returns submitted as of August 31.
Last year, over 7.3 crore ITRs had been filed by September 16, 2025, which was the extended deadline for filing returns for non-audit cases for AY 2025-26.
“ A record 7.8 crore+ ITRs have been filed for AY 2026-27 as on August 31, 2026,” the Income Tax Department said in a post on X.
The latest figure includes more than 5.9 crore ITR-1 and ITR-2 returns filed by the July 31 deadline.
August 31 was the deadline for taxpayers having business or professional income and not covered under tax audit provisions to file their returns for AY 2026-27. Such taxpayers can file the applicable forms, including ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 or ITR-7, depending on their category.
ITR-3 is applicable to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families having income from a proprietary business or profession, while ITR-4 is a simplified return form for certain small and medium taxpayers.
ITR-5 is used by firms, Limited Liability Partnerships and cooperative societies. ITR-6 is applicable to companies registered under the Companies Act, while ITR-7 is filed by trusts and charitable institutions. (Agencies)
