Jammu Tawi, June 19: With the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra set to commence on July 3, authorities have put in place an unprecedented security and logistical framework across Jammu to ensure the safe, secure and smooth conduct of the 57-day pilgrimage.
High-resolution CCTV cameras, advanced surveillance systems and a multi-layered security grid have been deployed at all major transit points, including the base camp at Bhagwati Nagar and transit camps in Samba and Kathua. Security arrangements have also been significantly strengthened at Jammu Railway Station, the primary entry point for thousands of pilgrims arriving from different parts of the country.
Official sources said the transit camps and the Bhagwati Nagar base camp have been equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance infrastructure to maintain round-the-clock monitoring and ensure a peaceful Yatra.
“All the transit camps in Jammu and the base camp at Bhagwati Nagar have been readied with foolproof security to welcome the Amarnath Yatris and ensure a peaceful pilgrimage,” Joint Director, Tourism Department, Aijaz Qaisar, told Northlines.
Security forces have already begun taking charge of the arrangements at the camps and other strategic locations. Authorities said the enhanced security measures are aimed at instilling confidence among pilgrims undertaking the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Sonali Mishra, reviewed the security and logistical arrangements at Jammu Railway Station and said a comprehensive, multi-layered security mechanism has been established at the station.
“We have reviewed all arrangements and are further strengthening the system. The work is being carried out in close coordination with all agencies and stakeholders,” Mishra told reporters.
She said manpower deployment has been enhanced and advanced technical gadgets and modern security equipment are being extensively used as part of the security grid. Detailed discussions have also been held among various agencies to ensure seamless implementation of security measures during the pilgrimage.
According to Mishra, the security framework involves close coordination among the RPF, Government Railway Police (GRP), local police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), district police and railway authorities.
“All agencies are working together to ensure foolproof arrangements not only for pilgrims undertaking the Yatra but also for tourists travelling to the Valley,” she said, adding that efforts are focused on providing passengers with a safe, secure and hassle-free experience throughout the pilgrimage period.
On the logistical front, authorities have made elaborate transport arrangements for the pilgrims. A fleet of 200 buses, including deluxe and semi-deluxe coaches, will be deployed by the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) for the Yatra.
Of these, 100 buses will operate daily in the form of ‘jathas’ between Jammu and Srinagar, covering both the traditional Pahalgam route and the Baltal axis. The remaining buses will be stationed at strategic locations such as Ramban, Banihal, Udhampur and Nagrota to ensure that pilgrims do not face inconvenience in case of mechanical breakdowns or emergencies.
Some reserve buses will also escort the pilgrim convoys so that yatris can be shifted immediately if required, ensuring uninterrupted movement of the pilgrimage.
The transit camp at Samba has accommodation capacity for over 300 pilgrims, while the Kathua camp can house more than 150 yatris. The Bhagwati Nagar base camp can accommodate over 4,000 pilgrims in its main hall, with an additional 5,000 pilgrims able to stay in the open area under tight security arrangements.
Officials said pilgrims are expected to start arriving at the transit camps and Bhagwati Nagar from July 1, where they will be received under one of the most extensive security deployments ever witnessed for the Yatra.
The 57-day Shri Amarnath Yatra 2026 will commence on July 3 and conclude on August 27, with authorities expressing confidence that the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders will ensure the smooth, secure and successful conduct of the annual pilgrimage.
