Kolkata, May 6: Gyanesh Kumar has directed authorities in West Bengal to immediately arrest those involved in post-poll violence and vandalism, following recent incidents that left two people dead and several party offices damaged.

The directive was issued to the chief secretary, director general of police, Kolkata Police commissioner, senior officials of central armed police forces, and district-level administrators, instructing them to ensure continuous patrolling in sensitive areas and take strict action against offenders.

“Those responsible for inciting violence and carrying out acts of vandalism must be arrested immediately,” an official said, quoting the CEC’s orders. He also stressed the need for swift and firm enforcement of law to restore normalcy.

The move comes amid heightened concerns over law and order in parts of the state, with the Election Commission of India closely monitoring the situation. Police and central forces have intensified vigil and coordination across districts to prevent further incidents.

A senior police officer said all units have been placed on high alert, with clear instructions to deal firmly with any attempt to disturb peace.

The assembly elections in the state were conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29, with counting held on May 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a landslide victory, winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress. (Agencies)
