Introducing our new Group Editor at AIM

I still remember the first time that I saw my byline in print. The thrill I felt wasn’t about vanity – it was about being struck by the potential that reporting can make an difference.

Good journalism can change things. It can right a wrong, shine a light into dark corners, and give people a voice when they feel they have none. Journalists must listen carefully, ask the awkward question and never forget that behind every headline is a real person whose story deserves to be heard.

That lesson guided me for more than two decades as a journalist and, for the past eight and bit years, as chairman of Jersey’s Consumer Council. It is also what brings me, with genuine pride and a deep sense of responsibility, to my new role as editor of the Jersey Evening Post.

The role has changed immensely since Walter Guiton published these pages almost 136 years ago for one halfpenny, as it now includes the responsibility for our sister publications Bailiwick Express Jersey and Bailiwick Express Guernsey, various podcasts, a radio station and countless supplements and magazines as part of the wider All Island Media group as its group editorial director.

For generations, the Jersey Evening Post has been the place where our community sees itself reflected – its triumphs, its frustrations, its debates and its celebrations. And, more recently, the Bailiwick Express brand has ripped up the rule book to deliver bold, informative and agenda-setting news.

To be entrusted with helping to lead these brands into the future is both humbling and energising.

Although I am in the final months of my maximum-allowed nine-year term at the Consumer Council, the values that shaped that work are the same ones that shaped my career in journalism: making sure people are treated fairly, shining a light on issues that matter and holding decision-makers to account are instincts which have never left me. In truth, they have only grown stronger.

In recent months, I even toyed with the idea of standing in the Island’s elections, driven by those same principles, and the view that our political leaders could do more to help Islanders through this cost-of-living crisis. But, with no appetite to play political back-scratching games and a belief that a lone voice among 49 States Members will fail to make an impact, I kept returning to one thought – where could I make the greatest impact? It’s fair to say that I didn’t have to wait long for that opportunity to present itself.

Helping to lead these trusted news brands, asking questions on behalf of the public, and ensuring voices are heard, is where I can do the most good.

The challenges facing news organisations in 2026 are real. The way people access information has changed, and continues to change at a frightening pace.

Audiences expect immediacy, accessibility and transparency across multiple platforms. But while the methods of delivery evolve, the core purpose of journalism does not. People still need trusted information. They still want clarity in a noisy world. They still want someone asking questions on their behalf.

That is the role this newspaper, and our wider media family, must continue to play.

But we cannot do that from behind desks alone.

What matters most to me now is meeting you. Listening to your experiences, your concerns, your ideas for Jersey’s future. Because the Jersey Evening Post and the Bailiwick Express brands are not mine – they are yours. I am simply the custodian of these titles for a time.

In the months ahead, I will be inviting you – our readers and subscribers – to meet me and my team, to help shape the stories we tell and the issues we pursue. The best journalism begins not with assumptions, but with listening.

And it is for that reason that I want to share with you my direct and private email address, and why you will find it alongside our postal address on our weekday letters page, so that you can drop me a line, tell me what is on your mind and point our committed and dedicated newsroom in the direction that matters to you.

You can reach me by emailing carl@ allisland.media.
