A TEACHER has more than doubled his fundraising target after completing an extraordinary 241-mile walking challenge during the May half-term break.
Kalem Taylor set out to raise £2,000 for Mind Jersey and Jersey Cancer Relief by walking 48.2 miles a day for five consecutive days – the equivalent of five laps of Jersey.
Since completing his challenge in the early hours of Saturday morning, Mr Taylor has raised over £4,200 for the two local charities.
The fundraiser saw him take in more than half a million steps, pushing through long hours, hot weather, exhaustion and physical discomfort to support organisations helping Islanders facing mental health challenges and cancer diagnoses.
The challenge follows another fundraising effort last November when Mr Taylor completed a cycling, swimming and walking challenge in aid of Movember.
Explaining his motivation before setting off, he said: “This year, I wanted to push myself even further and support two amazing local charities that help Islanders through some of life’s toughest moments.
“Spending time outdoors has been shown to have a powerful impact on our mental wellbeing.
“With every step, I embraced that benefit while pushing my limits and raising awareness for these incredible charities.”
Speaking after crossing the finish line, Mr Taylor said the achievement was only just beginning to sink in.
He said: “Right now, recovery looks a lot less glamorous than the challenge itself.
“But despite all of that, I wouldn’t change a thing.”
While the physical challenge was demanding, Mr Taylor said the support he received from the community had left the biggest impression.
“Every message, share, donation, wave from a stranger, and person who walked a few miles alongside me helped get me through some very tough moments,” he added.
“I’m incredibly proud to have completed this challenge, but the real reason for doing it was always the cause.”
Mr Taylor said supporting the charities had been the driving force behind the challenge.
“Mind Jersey help and provide support for people struggling with their mental health.
“I have experienced first-hand over the past five days how powerful the mind is in a positive way, but equally in a negative way, so being there for each other and talking about what’s going on in our heads can make a massive difference.
“The second charity, Jersey Cancer Relief, provide support to Islanders affected by cancer, helping to ease some of the challenges that come with diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
“Their support makes a real difference to many local families.”
Thanking those who followed his progress throughout the week, he added: “If you followed the journey and were waiting to see whether I’d actually make it to the finish line… I did.
“Thank you again for helping turn an idea that sounded slightly ridiculous into something unforgettable.
“Every mile completed was for something bigger than me.”
