ISLANDERS are being reminded to check their hedges for hedgehogs before starting the annual branchage.

The Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group has said several of the creatures have been admitted recently after sustaining strimmer injuries – with only one surviving.

The branchage is a Jersey law requiring landowners to cut back overhanging vegetation from roads and footpaths.

However, the JHPG has said that this marks the start of their own “silly season” and are reminding Islanders to take “extra care” while doing garden work.

In a statement, the group said that one hedgehog had to be put to sleep with a nose wound, and another hog was left with its nose hanging off due to being sliced through.

A hedgehog relies on its sense of smell and hearing to find food in the wild, therefore these injuries are “extremely difficult to heal”, the statement continued.

Hedgehogs tend to nest under hedges, in compost heaps, twig piles, long grass and in pampas grass.
