Shop sells out of fans as heatwave continues

THE current heatwave has now become one of the most severe seen in Jersey: the fifth occasion where maximum temperatures have exceeded 30°C for four successive days – at any time of year.

Yesterday’s high of 33.4°C was just short of the maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday, 34.2°C, which was more than five degrees above the record for May prior to this year, as well as being Jersey’s 11th hottest-day on record.

A fifth straight day of 30°C could be seen today, with Jersey Met forecasting that figure as today’s maximum, prior to a fall for the following days: 24°C tomorrow, a degree cooler on Saturday and 21°C on Sunday. The possibility of showers, some of which could be thundery, is a feature of the forecast for the coming days.

A minimum temperature of 22.0°C during the early hours of yesterday was one of only six occasions on record where the overnight temperature hasn’t slipped beneath 22°C. The all-time record “low” was seen on 19 July 2022, when a reading of 25.5°C broke the previous mark of 22.3°C, which was set on 5 August 2003 and remains second on the list.

The hot weather, combined with the half-term holiday, has seen large numbers of people heading to the beach and led to a busy period for lifeguards, particularly on Tuesday afternoon, which featured several rescues and one beach-goer being treated for an unidentified injury.

There were also complaints of anti-social behaviour by youths at Havre de Pas on Tuesday evening, after the café had closed at 6pm. A police spokesperson confirmed that an honorary officer had attended and warned a group who were playing football at the Lido site.

Some retailers reported a surge in sales of fans. Carla Martini, from Romerils, said the shop had a 450% increase in transactions compared to normal – and that the shelves were empty by the end of Monday.

“It went absolutely mental,” she said, praising the “amazing” work of staff in helping serve customers as quickly as possible.

A single negative note was that the online systems at Romerils weren’t able to keep up with the pace of fans being sold, leading some customers to order items online which had already sold out in person. A delivery of fresh stock is expected next week.

Feeling the heat

Since temperatures were first monitored in 1894, Jersey Met has logged five spells of sustained heat where the temperature has reached 30°C or higher for four consecutive days:

  • 21-24 August 1950
  • 25-28 June 1976
  • 1-4 August 1990
  • 8-11 August 2003
  • 24-27 (and counting?) May 2026
