NEW portable air conditioning units have been installed throughout the General Hospital in time for this week’s hot weather, the Health Department has confirmed.
Record-breaking heat in June prompted concerns about the conditions faced by patients and staff.
But, as temperatures look set to reach up to 34 degrees again this week, Public Health officials have reassured Islanders that new air conditioning units have now arrived and are in use.
During June’s heatwave, high temperatures in two out of the seven available operating theatres led more than 30 non-urgent procedures to be rescheduled.
One mother who described her stay on Robin Ward with her baby as “unbearable” was prompted to launch a petition calling for air conditioning across the entire Hospital.
The petition quickly surpassed the 1,000 signatures needed for a ministerial response, and stands at 2,641 signatures at the time of writing.
Meanwhile, 200 patients had their operations postponed during another heatwave in May when hospital air conditioning failed due to issues with a chilled water unit on the roof. However, the issues in June were not related to this unit.
