Samsung rebuilding One UI could make cheap Galaxy phones worth buying again

Samsung’s affordable Galaxy phones often have capable cameras, good displays, solid build quality, and large batteries, yet they rarely feel as polished as the company’s flagships.

One UI runs well on powerful Snapdragon and Exynos chips, but its feature-heavy design can overwhelm the weaker processors inside Galaxy A, M, and F series phones.

A reported One UI rebuild could finally give these devices the smoother performance their hardware deserves.

I have always considered One UI one of the most capable versions of Android.

Samsung gives me an impressive level of control over almost every part of the phone, from the lock screen and notification panel to multitasking, automation, battery management, and app behavior.

Features such as Good Lock, Modes and Routines, Edge panels, Secure Folder, and Samsung DeX make Galaxy phones feel far more versatile than many competing Android phones.

On a flagship Galaxy phone like my Galaxy S25 Ultra, all of this works well. Powerful Snapdragon and Exynos processors, fast storage, and plenty of RAM give One UI enough headroom to handle multitasking without making the phone feel overloaded.

I can jump between apps, open the camera, use split-screen mode, or run several routines without constantly noticing what is happening behind the scenes.

That is when One UI is at its best. It feels polished, responsive, and useful rather than unnecessarily complicated.

The problem is that Samsung ships largely the same feature-rich experience across phones with dramatically different levels of processing power.

Cheaper Galaxy phones expose their weaknesses

The problem with One UI becomes much easier to notice when I move away from my current Galaxy S25 Ultra to a previous Galaxy A73.

On Galaxy A-series phones, the same feature-heavy interface often has to run on weaker processors, slower storage, and tighter memory limits.

Features that feel effortless on my S25 Ultra can suddenly introduce small delays, inconsistent animations, slower app launches, and occasional hesitation during multitasking.

None of these issues necessarily makes an affordable Galaxy phone unusable. However, they gradually affect how polished the device feels.

What frustrates me is that Samsung’s affordable phones frequently get many other things right.

Even outside the flagship lineup, I can usually expect an attractive AMOLED display, dependable battery life, a capable primary camera, solid build quality, and a design that does not look cheaper than Samsung’s premium devices.

Samsung also tends to include practical features that some rivals skip, such as water resistance on selected models, long software support, Knox security, and a familiar ecosystem of apps and accessories.

The processor and software experience are often the missing pieces. My previous Galaxy A73 was a good example of this problem.

It had a large, vibrant AMOLED display, a premium-looking design, excellent battery life, a microSD slot (yes), water resistance, and a camera that was perfectly capable in good lighting.

However, I occasionally noticed animation stutters, small delays when opening apps, and hesitation while switching between the camera, gallery, and other demanding applications.

That’s why a recent leak regarding the One UI development has got me excited.

While Samsung has not confirmed it officially, I can understand why Samsung might be exploring the idea.

One UI has evolved through years of Android updates, visual redesigns, Galaxy-exclusive features, AI additions, and more.

Starting with a cleaner AOSP-based foundation could theoretically allow Samsung to remove legacy components, rethink how resources are managed, and build future features more efficiently.

I would not want Samsung to discard the features and customization that make One UI special in the first place.

However, rebuilding the foundation while preserving the familiar experience could give the company a cleaner platform for its next decade of Galaxy devices.

The difference could be far more noticeable on its affordable devices.

After all, these devices don’t have the luxury of flagship processors, and even a small reduction in background activity could make a meaningful difference on a Galaxy A series phone.

That is why a rebuilt One UI could potentially feel like a hardware upgrade for cheaper Galaxy devices.

Again, this is speculative, but if Samsung is discussing how to reduce One UI’s complexity and improve its efficiency, I see that as an encouraging sign.

Samsung can fix its weakest phones

Samsung’s cheaper Galaxy phones have rarely lacked good hardware; they simply needed software that matches their limitations.

A lighter, better-optimized version of One UI could finally help the Galaxy A, M, and F series feel smoother, faster, and more dependable without sacrificing the features that make Samsung phones appealing.

The reported rebuild is still far from certain, but it could become one of the company’s most important software changes in years.
