I let Gemini and Google Maps talk to each other, and my vacation photos finally make sense
by Rahul Naskar · Android PoliceGoogle Maps has been my default maps app since I switched from Windows Phone to Android. After using the app for years, I have mixed opinions about Google’s maps app.
While I appreciate its ambition to become more than a navigation app, Google Maps nowadays feels more complicated than it should for someone who wants to use it as a navigation app.
I no longer use Google Maps for navigation, but I haven’t given up using it for its advanced features. I especially admire its Timeline feature, which goes back in time and remembers where you have been and the routes you took.
The Timeline feature deserves a special mention because it can do wonders when used the right way. To make the most of it, I used Google Maps and Gemini together.
I didn’t expect it to work this well. I let Gemini and Google Maps talk to each other, and my vacation photos finally make sense. Here is why.

Vacation photos are more than just images
I have taken three trips with my partner since the middle of last year and have taken hundreds of photos. We captured some candid shots, forests, the ocean, and quiet moments in between.
These photos are saved in Google Photos, and I sometimes go back in time to check out those wonderful moments we shared.
However, I can no longer remember exactly what happened each day, nor do I remember the sequence of places we explored together.
While Google Photos tells you when you captured a particular shot, it isn’t easy to remember how that day on the beach unfolded.
It can’t remind you of what the experience felt like, nor does it provide the context. That’s why I stopped relying solely on Google Photos to relive those moments through my vacation photos.
Instead, I open Google Photos, note the date, and switch to Timeline in Google Maps to trace the places we visited on that day. I take a screenshot of that and seek help from Gemini to make more sense of how the day went and the photos.
Gemini and Google Maps together can make sense of my photos better than anything else
I uploaded a screenshot of Google Maps’ Timeline to Gemini and asked to turn my movement history into a narrative instead of listing the locations.
This turns locations into a story, and just like most people, I reconnect with memories more deeply when there is a narrative behind them.
We didn’t hire a photographer to capture our best moments throughout the day, but we did capture some beautiful moments every time we visited together. So, I asked Gemini to show me all the photos that I captured that day.
Not only did Google Photos show me all the photos after I typed the prompt, but it also added a short story about how we spent the time on the beach and what the weather was like.
However, this is not the default setup in Gemini. You’ll need to enable the Google Photos toggle to allow Gemini access to your photos.
The short story that Gemini provided encouraged me to explore what more it can do. This was when I entered another prompt asking Gemini to help me understand the overall experience of that day based on the sequence of the locations, timing, and photos.
As a result, I received one of the best responses from Gemini. When Gemini replied that being at the beach when the sun is high creates a specific mental clarity, I went back to the exact moment in my head.
Gemini also described the feeling. It is said that cool waves against the sun’s heat pull you entirely into the “now.” After reading this line, memories of that beach started feeling real again.
In my next prompt, I asked Gemini to help me remember details I may have forgotten while taking those photos.
Google provided another great response after this, describing the role the Casuarina trees on the coastline play in producing a specific whistling sound when the sea breezes pass through them, the social horizon, and more.
It felt like I was living those moments once again without taking another trip with my partner.
Gemini and Google Maps help relive vacations beyond photos
Each vacation photo carries a story, but as time passes, it becomes harder to reconnect with the memories behind it.
A photo app can only show what you captured, but the hard work of reliving the journey rests on you.
While it requires some work to use Gemini and Google Maps together the right way, it’s worth it because it not only takes you down memory lane but also makes old vacation photos feel alive again.
