Samsung Galaxy Book laptops may take the Android route

by · Android Police

Android 17 will introduce a native desktop mode similar to DeX available on flagship Samsung phones. Alongside this, Google will add a new bubble-based multitasking feature to the OS to make it easier to run multiple apps at the same time. It appears Samsung wants to capitalize on these desktop-focused features by launching a Galaxy Book-branded laptop running Android 17 and One UI 9.

Samsung's Galaxy Book branding is reserved for its Windows-based laptops. For its ChromeOS devices, it uses the Galaxy Chromebook brand.

However, SamMobile reports that Samsung is working on a Galaxy Book-branded laptop running Android 17 and One UI 9. And it's not just working on one laptop, but seemingly an entire lineup consisting of a budget, a mid-range, and a high-end model. The flagship laptop will supposedly feature a sleek design.

Besides Android 17 and One UI 9, Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Books will pack Galaxy AI features. The company's AI features are currently only available on its phones, tablets, and smartwatches.

While not mentioned in the report, these Galaxy Books could use a Snapdragon X Elite processor or Samsung's in-house Exynos chip. More than the hardware, it will be interesting to see how Samsung adopts Android 17 and One UI 9 for the big screen and keyboard-mouse combo. Plus, none of this will solve the problem of Android apps not being optimized for the big screen.

A big stage for Android 17's desktop debut

Google will likely hype Android 17's new desktop mode when it releases the OS to the public.

It's possible that Google partners with Samsung to showcase the Android 17-powered Galaxy Books at its upcoming I/O 2026 event in a few weeks from now. Otherwise, Samsung may unveil them at an Unpacked event in July. However, the laptops are unlikely to launch anytime soon since they are seemingly still in development.

Google is already working on merging ChromeOS into Android. Given Samsung's close ties with Google, it could be the first company to launch a Galaxy Book running this merged OS.

Whatever the case may be, Galaxy Book-branded laptops running One UI 9 should give Android 17's desktop mode the attention it deserves.
