Hearts of Oak target Accra Lions’ Richard Afoakwa for coaching role
· GhanaSoccernetHearts of Oak have made contact with Accra Lions coach Richard Afoakwa over a potential move to the club as assistant coach and head coach of the youth team.
The Phobians are restructuring their technical department following a disappointing 2025/26 season, which ended with the dismissal of head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani.
As part of the rebuild, Hearts have identified Afoakwa as a leading candidate to strengthen the coaching setup, with the highly-rated tactician attracting interest for his work in player development and team management.
However, Accra Lions are determined to keep hold of Afoakwa and have opened talks with him over a contract extension in an effort to fend off Hearts' interest.
Both clubs are understood to be working behind the scenes as they seek to secure the services of the promising coach ahead of the new season.
Afoakwa has built a reputation as one of Ghana's emerging young coaches. Before joining Accra Lions, he played a key role in helping Inter Allies avoid relegation during the 2024/25 campaign, a feat that enhanced his standing within the local game.
Should Hearts succeed in their pursuit, Afoakwa would join the club at a time when the former Ghana Premier League champions are looking to rebuild after another underwhelming campaign and return to challenging for major honours.
