World Cup 2026: Nico Williams faces race against time for Spain’s opener against Cape Verde
· GhanaSoccernetSpain could be without winger Nico Williams in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The one-time champions are going into the tournament with youngster Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, who are both on the road to recovery from injury.
According to Williams, who is of Ghanaian descent, there is the possibility of missing the World Cup opener, although he is getting better by the day.
Speaking to El Chiringuito, the Athletic Club forward said, “Well, I am progressing step by step in my recovery from injury. I think I am much better now. I expect that I may not be ready for the first match in the World Cup, but that's okay. I have a great desire, and I will continue working on Saturday.”
Williams, 23, has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines in recent months, missing valuable time with Athletic Bilbao during a crucial stage of the season.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente hopes the attacker recovers in time for the crucial opening match against Cape Verde on June 15.
Should Williams miss the opener, he could return for the subsequent Group H matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
