Former Ghana defender Daniel Opare identifies Black Stars' main problem
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Ghana defender Daniel Opare has identified the root cause of the Black Stars' struggles ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the team has plenty of individual talent but lacks a collective identity.
This follows the recent struggles of the four-time African champions who have failed to go beyond the group stage of each of their last three major competitions.
In an exclusive interview with 3Sports, the former Real Madrid right-back did not mince words.
"We have the players. We have the talents, but we haven't gotten a team yet. I think that's the problem," Opare stated.
He explained that frequent changes to the squad have prevented players from building the necessary understanding on the pitch. "Sometimes, the changes are too much, which affects the team. If the player is doing good for his club, we keep him. We build the team around them," he advised.
Opare also urged Ghanaians to temper expectations, suggesting that simply advancing from the group stage would be a credible achievement given the current phase of development.
"If we are able to get out of the group stage, Ghanaians should be happy because this is the time we have to build the team around these boys," he added.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. They open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17.
