Mexico forward Julian Quinones nets historic first goal at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Julian Quinones has become the first goalscorer of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after finding the net in Mexico’s opening fixture of the tournament.

The Mexico forward was named in the starting lineup for the host nation on Thursday night as they faced South Africa in the opening match of this year’s World Cup at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

From the outset, Mexico showed intent, pressing forward and looking to make an early statement in front of their home supporters.

The breakthrough came after a defensive lapse from the opposition in the 9th minute, and Quiñones reacted quickest to punish the mistake.

The Al-Qadsiah striker showed sharp instincts inside the area and finished clinically to put Mexico ahead, triggering celebrations across the stadium and giving the hosts the first goal of the tournament.

With the lead secured very early, Mexico will now hope to get a second to serve as insurance before the second half. For South Africa, Hugo Broos and his men will be forced to open up play, particularly in the second half to try to avoid a defeat.
