Kofi Adams reveals criteria behind Carlos Queiroz's appointment as Black Stars coach
· GhanaSoccernetSports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has shed light on the selection criteria that led to the appointment of veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as the new Black Stars head coach, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup just weeks away.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams explained that the limited time before the tournament made it essential to find a manager who could make an immediate impact.
"We needed a coach who is ready to take the team because the World Cup is just around the corner. Whether local or foreign, the coach must be ready," he stated.
Rather than commit to a long-term project, the Ministry and the Ghana Football Association agreed on a flexible short-term arrangement. Queiroz has been handed a contract of up to four months, covering the duration of the tournament.
However, Adams revealed that a performance-based clause has been included, giving Ghana the first right to extend the deal if the coach meets expectations.
"We didn't want a coach to come and perform well with us and then leave. We have put it in the contract that if you perform well, we reserve the right to retain you," Adams explained.
Queiroz replaces Otto Addo and faces an immediate test, leading Ghana in a tough Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician has already embarked on a European tour to monitor Ghanaian players, with an emphasis on merit-based selection for both local and foreign-based talent.
The Black Stars open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17.
