Think of our pocket - Fred Pappoe advises GFA on next Black Stars coach appointment

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has called on the Association to take a close look at its financial capacity as it searches for a new head coach for the Black Stars.

The GFA is in the process of appointing a new coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March after consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany. The move comes with less than three months to the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

A number of high-profile coaches have been linked with the role, including Carlos Queiroz, Fernando Santos, Paulo Bento, Kwasi Appiah, Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet and Slaven Bilić.

However, Pappoe insists the decision must be guided by financial discipline, stressing that the country’s budget for coaching compensation should be a key consideration.

“We must also think of our pocket,” he told Graphic Sports.

“We need to be confident in our resources and understand how much the association or the nation is prepared to invest in the coach’s compensation package.

"That’s another crucial part of the bargain," he added.

Meanwhile, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed that a new head coach will be announced this week.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico, followed by another against Wales on June 2 as part of their World Cup build-up.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the tournament, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama.
