World Cup 2026: Modric is still the main man of the team - Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic
· GhanaSoccernetCroatia coach Zlatko Dalic will be counting on veteran midfielder Luka Modric to deliver the goods ahead of the World Cup.
The 40-year-old AC Milan and Real Madrid legend is expected to lead the 2018 finalist at the tournament in North America.
Modric played a huge role in arguably Croatia's most successful period in football after leading the small Eastern European nation to silver and bronze medals at the 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively.
At 40, there are questions over his ability to deliver at the highest stage, but Dalic believes the evergreen midfielder is in for a befitting last dance with the Vatrenis.
“Modrić is still the main player of this team, the driving force of the national team, the man who holds the game and the team together ,” Dalić told reporters.
“Luka means a lot to this national team, which he has shown with his dedication, professionalism, games and behavior. He is a top professional who does his job at the highest level. Even though he is now 40 years old, he is still extremely ambitious and is the main engine of this national team.”
Meanwhile, Modric remains one of four players to have played at the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa are the other three and all four players have been included in their squads for the 2026 edition.
Croatia will begin their tournament against England before facing Panama and Ghana in Group L.
