Bjorkegren encouraged by England test as Black Queens end year on positive note
· GhanaSoccernetKim Lars Bjorkegren believes the Black Queens’ 2-0 defeat to European champions England provided a valuable lesson, insisting Ghana are edging closer to the top level of women’s football.
The friendly match in Southampton concluded a busy and successful year for the Black Queens, who had earlier won bronze at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and secured qualification for the next edition of the tournament.
Reflecting on the England game, Björkegren admitted the challenge was among the toughest in the women’s game but praised his players for their resilience.
"It was one of the toughest games that you can play in women’s football," he said. "It showed that we’re not England yet, but we’re getting closer. The players could see what it takes to reach the top, top, top world-class level."
The Swede was particularly impressed with how his side stayed competitive throughout the match.
"They also did very, very well. We stayed in the game for the whole game, at least 95 minutes," he noted.
Bjorkegren also highlighted the unity built within the squad and the strong connection with supporters, especially during recent matches in Accra.
"We felt that we did it all together. The fans, the players, the staff, all of us as one big family," he said.
The coach ended the year by expressing gratitude to Ghanaians and optimism for the future. "I’m super proud of the girls. I wish all the Ghanaian people a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope 2026 will be even more successful. Medase."
