Otto Addo should have resigned after AFCON qualification failure – Dr Nyaho Tamakloe

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe beleives Otto Addo should have resigned after failing to guide the Black Stars to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

His remarks come after the 50-year-old was relieved of his role after Black Stars suffered back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany in the March international window.

Ghana suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss against Ralf Rangnick's side in Vienna before a 2-1 loss against the world champions in Stuttgart.

Addo came under massive pressure after the senior national team failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON held in Morocco for the first time in over two decades.

The Black Stars failed to win a game during the qualifiers, recording three defeats and three draws.

However, Addo led the team to secure their fifth qualification to the World Cup scheduled to be hosted in North America this summer.

Following his dismissal last month, Dr Nyaho Tamakloe stressed that the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach should have left the job after the AFCON qualification.

“After he failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, I said to myself that he cannot handle the Black Stars,” he told Graphic Sports.

The Hearts of Oak Board Member further insisted that the axe should have fallen much earlier.

“The decision is right and long overdue. He should have realised he wouldn’t be able to handle the team and resigned after failing in key matches, rather than waiting to be sacked,” he asserted.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), meanwhile, is expected to announce a head coach in the coming days before the Black Stars regroup in May for the friendly game against Mexico, before wrapping up their friendly games against Wales.
