Port City coach Abdallah Brimah backs call for more local players to be included in Black Stars squad
· GhanaSoccernetHead coach of Port City Abdallah Brimah has joined calls for the inclusion of more home-based players in the Black Stars.
His comment comes after the raging debate over a reserved quota system in the national team for players plying their trade in the Ghana Premier League.
Although his players are yet to taste topflight football after leading them to promotion, Brimah believes GPL stars have what it takes to excel at the world stage.
"Every coach has his own philosophy and the type of players he wants. You may see a local player and be surprised by how well he fits into a system and earns a call-up,” he told Citi Sports.
“I believe some of our local players are very, very good. They have what it takes to play at the World Cup. Sometimes, we set such high standards that we overlook them and assume they cannot deliver," he added.
“Those playing abroad were once given a chance. If local players are also given that opportunity, they can make it. I have confidence in that, but it depends on how the coach structures things.”
“I strongly believe that when local players are given the chance, they can excel."
New Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to name his squad for May's international friendlies in a few weeks time.
