World Cup 2026: Panama star Ismael Diaz sends strong warning to Ghana ahead of opener
· GhanaSoccernetPanama forward Ismael Diaz has expressed strong confidence in his country's ability to compete against any opponent as the Central Americans prepare for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Ghana.
Speaking to reporters from Panama's training base in New Tecumseth, Ontario, Diaz insisted that his side has developed the mentality and quality needed to challenge the world's best teams.
"We have shown that we can compete against any team," Diaz said as preparations intensified ahead of Wednesday's Group L encounter at Toronto Stadium.
The 29-year-old striker is set to participate in his second FIFA World Cup after previously representing Panama at Russia 2018.
Reflecting on his journey, Diaz highlighted the lessons he has learned throughout his career and how those experiences have shaped him into a more mature player.
"Throughout a player's career, you learn a lot from both positive and negative situations. I've learned from everything and now I try to contribute both on and off the field," he explained.
Panama continued their preparations with a rigorous training schedule that included tactical video analysis, on-field drills and recovery sessions.
The squad remains fully focused on the challenge posed by Ghana, a team equally determined to begin their World Cup campaign on a winning note.
Despite the magnitude of the occasion, Diaz believes Panama are ready to embrace the challenge.
"We're not afraid of anyone. We want to compete against whoever is in front of us," he said.
The striker's confidence reflects the growing belief within the Panamanian camp that they can cause problems for more established football nations and potentially make history at the tournament.
A positive result against Ghana would provide the perfect platform for Panama's ambitions in Group L as they seek to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
