Hohoe United FC to restart from Greater Accra Division Two after four-year ban

Hohoe United FC will restart their football journey from the lower rungs of the game and will compete in the Greater Accra Division Two upon the expiration of a lengthy suspension imposed by the Ghana Football Association.

The ruling, delivered by the GFA Disciplinary Committee on Friday, May 1, 2026, confirmed a multi-season ban following the club’s unilateral withdrawal from the ongoing Ghana Premier League campaign.

The decision effectively strips Hohoe United of their top-flight status and ensures that, even after serving their suspension, they must rebuild from the third tier of Ghanaian football.

The withdrawal -communicated to the GFA during the season- was deemed a serious breach of league regulations, triggering a wave of sanctions that have significantly altered the club’s trajectory. Chief among them is the suspension from all GFA-organized competitions, alongside administrative and financial penalties.

In addition to the ban, the Committee ruled that all registered players be granted free agent status, allowing them to move freely to other clubs while honoring any prior transfer-related obligations. This decision has effectively dismantled the squad, leaving Hohoe United without a core playing body ahead of their eventual return.

Financially, the club has also been hit hard. The Disciplinary Committee ordered Hohoe United to refund all support received from the GFA for the 2025/26 season, including the reported GH₵1 million disbursed at the start of the campaign, as well as any equipment and logistical resources provided. The ruling further stressed that the suspension does not absolve the club of any outstanding debts owed to the GFA or its affiliates.

The cumulative effect of these sanctions marks a dramatic setback for a club that began the season among Ghana’s elite.

Now facing years in the wilderness and a forced reset from Division Two, Hohoe United’s path back to relevance will require structural rebuilding, financial stability and a renewed commitment to compliance with league regulations.
