Brandon Thomas-Asante backs Black Stars to compete at 2026 World Cup

Coventry City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has backed the Black Stars to make a solid appearance at the upcoming 2026 World Cup tournament.

Following the draw in Washington on December 5, Ghana have been paired in Group L against England, 2018 World Cup finalist, Croatia and Panama.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded 48-team format, with Ghana securing one of Africa’s nine automatic slots.

It will be Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, having previously competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals.

Speaking to PFA, Thomas-Asante, who has been impressive for Coventry City stressed the Black Stars is bent on making a competitive appearance at the global showpiece.

​"We are on track. We have a young, hungry squad, and the goal is clear: we want to be at the 2026 World Cup, and we want to compete” he told PFA.

Meanwhile, Ghana has secured a high-profile friendly match against Germany scheduled for March 30, 2026.

The 25-year-old forward made his debut for the West African football heavyweights in October 2024 and has his racked up seven appearances, scoring just a goal in the process.

The former West Bromwich Albion star has been in a blistering form for Coventry City this season, racking up 10 goals and providing three assists in 17 appearances for the club this season.

Thomas-Asante will be hoping to make the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup tournament to be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. He is currently injured and has set sights on a strong return to action.
