Former Ghanaian midfielder Charles Sampson has reflected proudly on his long football career, describing his 18-year journey across Ghana and Europe as a successful and fulfilling one.

Despite not featuring for Europe’s elite clubs, Sampson, now head coach of the Black Princesses—believes his career achievements, longevity, and personal growth define true success in football.

“Oh yes, I would deem my career successful. I am truly grateful for the journey the Lord gave me. I have been able to establish myself and provide for my family through football,” he told the Ghana FA Podcast hosted by Patrick Akoto.

Reflecting on his standout moment during his playing days, he pointed to his time in Greece as the pinnacle of his career.

“My biggest career highlight was in Greece. During my time with Kalamata, we competed in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in Europe. Those moments stand out as the peak of my career because even today, the town still talks about that team,” he said.

Sampson enjoyed an impressive 18-year professional career spanning Ghana, Greece, and Sweden, defined by consistency, resilience, and memorable European nights.

He began his journey in Ghana with Ghapoha, where he spent two years and played a key role in the club’s impressive FA Cup run, helping them reach the final against Hearts of Oak before securing a move abroad.

Seeking new challenges, he joined Greek side Kalamata, where he spent seven influential years. His time in Greece proved to be the peak of his playing career, highlighted by appearances in the UEFA Intertoto Cup and his involvement in a team still fondly remembered by supporters.

He later continued his career in Sweden, where he played for nearly eight more years before eventually retiring from professional football.
