Stanbic Bank has redeemed its pledge to support Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup by donating GH¢3 million to the Black Stars World Cup Fundraising Committee.

The cheque was presented to the Deputy Minister for Finance and Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, on behalf of the Government as part of the ongoing fundraising campaign launched by President John Dramani Mahama in March.

The initiative seeks to raise $30 million from corporate Ghana and individuals to support the Black Stars ahead of the global tournament in North America, where Ghana will make its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L of the expanded 48-team competition and will face Panama in Toronto on June 17, England in Boston on June 23, and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.

Presenting the cheque, Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank, Kwamina Asomaning, explained that the bank’s support package has been structured into two parts — a direct participation contribution and a performance-based incentive package aimed at motivating the team to progress deep into the tournament.

According to him, the incentive component extends all the way to the final of the competition. He added that should the Black Stars fail to reach that stage, the incentive funds would still be donated to a charity selected by the national team.

“It’s a great pride for us to come together to support the Black Stars,” Mr Asomaning said.

“As a bank, we have been inextricably linked to sports in Ghana, and sponsored table tennis, arm wrestling, badminton, tennis, hockey, basketball, swimming, and soccer have not been left out. So we are quite excited today to be in a position to contribute to our participation in this global event.”

Other contributions announced on the day included a $500,000 donation from Newmont Ghana and GH¢250,000 from OmniBSIC Bank.

Receiving the donation, Hon. Ampem expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank and the other contributors for their support towards Ghana’s World Cup preparations.

“We are grateful for the response and, as we have already indicated, we will meet here every Thursday to receive donations,” he stated.
