IFAB approves red card rule for players who cover mouths in confrontations

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved a new disciplinary measure that could see players sent off for covering their mouths during confrontations on the pitch.

The decision, taken unanimously at a special meeting in Vancouver, follows consultations led by FIFA with key stakeholders across the game. The rule gives competition organisers the discretion to introduce sanctions, including red cards, for players who deliberately conceal their speech during heated exchanges with opponents.

The move is aimed at tackling inappropriate behaviour, including abusive language and discriminatory remarks, which are often difficult to detect when players cover their mouths. Football authorities believe the change will promote greater transparency and accountability in player interactions.

The amendment builds on earlier discussions at IFAB’s Annual General Meeting in February, where concerns were raised about the increasing use of such gestures to avoid scrutiny.

If implemented, referees will have the authority to punish players based on the nature of the incident, with competition organisers deciding whether to adopt the rule for specific tournaments.

The regulation is expected to be introduced ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with all 48 participating teams set to be informed in the coming weeks. The change represents a significant shift in how on-field conduct is monitored and disciplined at the highest level.
